After three years in the navy and three at Loughborough College I landed my first teaching job at Stockingford County School, Nuneaton in 1951. I was able to secure a position as handicraft teacher where for four years I was able to develop a programme that stood me in good stead at Bablake. When I applied for the post in 1955, I was first interviewed by Seaborne who said, "Have we not met before?". He was referring to the number of times that I had been sent to his office when a pupil in 1940-41. I replied, "Yes Sir, but it obviously did me good or I would not be standing before you now applying to teach under you."
The cigarette box held by headmaster Ernie Randle was later made by boys at Bablake when from 1955 to 1957 it was a course project. Just in case I look too young, I am second from the right.
I also taught the syllabus for the General Certificate of Education Geometrical and Engineering Drawing (well before CADs). In the view of the woodwork room below you can see a lesson on the blackboard using our old friend the cigarette box.
This room along with the old Metalwork Shop is now home to the Design and Technology course. The school plan from the school prospectus includes some new additions but the layout is basically the same as it was in the forties and fifties.
For those who may have taken that course in the middle fifties it may interest you to know that on a visit to the school in June of 1972 the pupils were sitting the same exam. The paper was almost indentical to the one for for which I taught in 1955, '56 and '57.
